The SWPL bowed out of this years league cup competition following last nights semi final against Glasgow City Starting brightly, City had early chances through Leanne Crichton and Jane Ross, with Catherine Fitzsimmons doing well to tip a Lisa Evans effort over the bar soon after. Fitzsimons then denied Emma Mitchell with a fine save. Forfar first foray up field saw Caroline Heron break free of the City backline. Baring down on goal, Heron’s effort on goal was blocked by Lee Alexander. City took the lead just after the half hour mark when Evans drove infield before striking the ball inside Fitzsimmons near post. The American goalkeeper would keep the 1-0 score line intact until the break. In the 57th minute City extended their lead when Leanne Ross followed up on a corner, to riffle the ball into the top corner of the net with some authority. Five minutes later Eilish McSorley made it three with a well finished low shot. The 65th minute saw Jane Ross follow up after Fitzsimmons parried an Evans shot to finish the scoring for the evening. Reflecting on the game, SWPL Assistant Coach Kevin Candy commented “One of maddening things about a result such as this is the fact that it doesn’t really reflect the efforts that our players put in. In terms of possession, efforts on target and of course goals, City were undoubtedly worthy winners. However I must say that we couldn’t have asked any more of the players in terms of commitment or application. They stuck to task diligently and have certainly grown in that respect since we played City earlier in the season.” “I think when you see the likes of Rachael Small driving forward with the ball in the 85th minute of a game in which you are four goals down; it really highlights the heart and determination that we have in the squad.”
