Farmington Under 13’s got off to a great start in their first game of the season, with the majority of the squad having just moved up from Under 11’s. Poor weather had meant the girls going into the league opener with a bit of trepidation having played no pre-season friendlies but these fears were soon dispelled as Kerri Younger started off where she had finished last season – on the goal trail. Within 5 minutes a through ball from captain Louise Falconer saw Younger sprint past the defence and despite her first effort being saved, she slotted home the re-bound.
Forfar had started brightly with a defence of Rebekah Brown, Tammy Guilcher and Lori Simpson looking composed in front of goalkeeper Rachelle Milton. Erin Cattanach joined Younger up front with Falconer the sole midfielder. After they lost Falconer through injury within 20 mins, a reshuffle of the pack was required with Ellice Brannan and Darcie Easton adding some valuable experience to the team. By this stage Arbroath had equalised from a debateable free-kick on the edge of the box which was struck low to Milton’s left.
Younger put Farmington back in front before half-time as a poor kick out from the Arbroath keeper was coolly dispatched into the back of the net. Beth Shillitto, Amber Ogg, Emily Thain and Danielle Grant had come on as the 13 girl squad all got good run outs.
In what was a fairly even game Forfar had the better of the chances and near misses from Brannan, Ogg, Easton and Grant kept the game finely balanced. That was to change with two quick goals in five minutes to all but end the game – Cattanach delivered two superb crosses from the right, with Grant poking home the first with her left foot and an unlucky Arbroath defender doing the same with the next cross.
Milton had a great right handed save to deny Arbroath before they did eventually score with a well struck second, with two minutes remaining. In what was a great all round team effort, Lori Simpson in defence deserves special mention for her excellent performance in defence. The girls face a difficult away trip to DUSC next Saturday in their second league game.
