29/11/09 - Forfar Farmington 1 Boroughmuir Thistle 1 [SWPL] |
|
A late change of venue saw Forfar Farmington complete their SWPL ‘short season’ at Forfar Albion’s Guthrie Park.
In chilly conditions both sides traded early tentative blows, Forfar’s best chance coming from Kim Thomson, her shot well dealt with by Rachel Harrison. Kerry Montgomery blasted her free kick into the Forfar wall in the 16th minute after an infringement on the edge of the home box. The visitors had two great chances in the 23rd minute. First McNicoll pushed a superlative Pam Livingtone shot round the post, and from the resultant corner McNicoll tipped a headed effort onto the bar from point blank range. Farmington would force a succession of corners soon after but would go behind in the 31st minute when a crossed ball was fired home by Kirsty McLaughlin. Farmington successfully reasserted themselves on the game three minutes later when Thomsons free kick was only cleared as far as captain Nicola Davidson who coolly dispatched the ball past Harrison. On the stroke of half time Caroline Heron fired into the side netting from a corner.
With the freshening wind now in Farmington’s favour they went in search of a winner. Alana Bruce had two good efforts in the 56th minute; first cutting inside her marker and curling a shot past the far post, and then seeing a powerfully struck effort tipped by Harrison at her front post. Farmington had previously changed to a 3-5-2 formation, but went to 3-4-3 with twenty minutes left, introducing Jane Brown and Emma Percy for Caren Webster and Eilidh Reid respectively. The change ensured the bulk of the attacking possession lay with the home side in the closing stages; however the Farmington backline of Milne, Collier and in particular Garrett expertly kept the visiting attack at bay. A number of crossed balls hurtled through the Boroughmuir box with no takers, and Thomson was forced into a last ditch tackle to deny Livingstone. The last chance of the match landed with Bruce who blasted over from distance.
With a 5th place SWPL finish secured with a vastly improved points per game ratio, Farmington enter the winter break on a positive note and can now plan ahead for the commencement of summer football in March 2010.
